KS3 and KS4

  • There are 6 forms per year group which are made up of mixed ability students. The school operates a horizontal tutoring model.
  • In teaching periods, the forms are split into 2 bands – X and Y. Each half year group is defined by ability in English.
  • The bands usually have 3 classes on the X band and 3 on the Y band. There are exceptions in PE and Technology.

Years 7, 8 and 9

  • Students are taught in mixed ability groups within each band for Art, Music and Drama.
  • Students are taught in mixed ability groups within bands for PE, Technology and ICT.
  • Students are placed in sets based on their attainment for the other subjects which include: Maths, English, Science, RE, History, Geography and MFL.

Years 10 and 11

  • There are again 6 form groups in each year made up of mixed ability students.
  • In core subjects, Maths, English, Science and RE the students are split into two equal half year groups, the X and the Y band. There are then 3 ability sets in each half year band.
  • Students are taught PE in half year groups in a mixed ability class.
  • Students study towards a further 3 subjects at GCSE level which they opt for at the end of Y9. These groups are mixed ability.
